1. How can I dispose of bulky trash items?

Single-family residential customers on the franchise trash program through Republic Trash Services may set out approved bulky items with weekly trash pickup. Items accepted include furniture, mattresses, televisions, solid paint, tree limbs and brush bundled and cut to 4' maximum lengths, microwave ovens, dry carpet bundled to 50 pounds max and 4' max, and small amounts of bundled or containerized construction and demolition debris.

Unacceptable items include oils, lead acid batteries, appliances, railroad ties, liquid paint, tires, commercial waste, and large amounts of construction and demolition debris.

The City's bulky item drop-off service provider is Waste Corporation of America (WCA), . Residents will be allowed to drop off up to 2,000 pounds of bulky items, such as limited amounts of construction debris, furniture, brush, tree limbs, and tires. Fees for the bulky items drop-off service are divided in half between the resident and the City. Residents will pay $9 for up to 2,000 pounds brought in by car, pick-up truck, or a trailer less than eight feet in length. For loads brought on a trailer eight feet or longer, the fee will be $11. Tires are assessed at $2.50 each and no more than five tires can be brought in one load.

The transfer station does not accept liquids/chemicals, appliances, hazardous material, regular weekly trash, commercial waste, lead acid batteries, or leaves/grass clippings.

WCA’s hours for drop-off are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. The facility is located at 3700 W. 7^th Street, on the south side of 7^th Street, just west of Schifferdecker Avenue. For questions specific to the drop-off service, contact WCA at (417) 623-6620.

2. How can I find out about tree removal services?

For information on the following services, call a Code Enforcement Officer at 417-624-0820 ext. 1525 & 1526: Permission to plant trees or shrubs in the street right-of-way (parking area), drainage ways or park areas; Dead or hazardous tree removal in the street or park areas; Permission to remove trees near public streets; Dead or hazardous trees on private property (the city can enforce tree removal or pruning for unsafe conditions); Tree limbs encroaching on private property and not dangerous must be resolved between property owners. 3. How do I learn about the hazardous materials handling?

4. Are there regulations on what can be discharged in the sewer system?

City ordinances and state and federal laws prohibit the discharge of some materials into the sanitary sewer system. If your business has a sewage discharge that is composed of a higher concentration of pollutants than domestic or residential waste, call the Public Works Department at 417-624-0820 ext. 1500 to receive information about permitting, pretreatment requirements and charges. Failure to do so may result in civil and criminal penalties.

5. Can I report property nuisances?

To report weed, trash, tall grass or other property nuisances, call the City of Joplin Code Enforcement Officer at (417) 624-0820 ext. 518.

6. How can I dispose of septic tank contents?

If you have septic or recreational vehicle holding tank waste to dispose of, call the Superintendent of Wastewater Plants at (417) 624-3615.

7. How do I report sewer back-up/stoppage?

If you notice a sewage backup or stoppage, call the City of Joplin Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 565. After hours, please call (417) 624-0820 ext. 420.

8. Where do I direct questions about my sewer and trash bill?

9. Can I learn more about storm water sewers?

10. Can I request street maintenance?

To request street grading, pothole repairs or other street and alley maintenance, call the Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 561.

11. Can I request a street sweeping?

12. What is the local procedure for trash collection?

Commercial and apartment complex trash is collected by private waste haulers. For a listing of local haulers call the Recycling Division at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501. Residential trash for every house, duplex, and approved apartment houses, is collected solely by Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services) through a franchise contract. 13. Can I file a trash collection complaint?

If you have a complaint concerning your commercial trash collection service, please try to resolve it with the private waste hauler with whom you signed up for service. If your problem persists, call the Recycling Division at 417-624-0820 Ext. 1501. If you have a complaint concerning your residential trash collection service, please try to resolve it with Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services), the city’s franchised residential trash contractor at 800-431-1507.
