I would like to see Joplin improve the walkability and bikeablity of Downtown for all residents. Lets consider moving the designated truck route off of Main. Let's improve crosswalks and stop lights. We need wider sidewalks and a designated bike lane. Our Downtown is awesome, let's encourage people to visit and linger.
Beyond Downtown, these need to connect with all area destinations, not just trails. I'd like to be able to ride a bike with my 7 year old to Target. Or to Wildcat Park. Or to Missouri Southern. Our city's health and wellness will improve if we are able to move and exercise while also accomplishing our day to day tasks. As well as improving the life of existing residents, the additional students and faculty that we will be hosting will be much more likely to love this city and decide to stay long term.

Simply put, the city needs to support Missouri Southern. Colleges and universities strengthen local economies. If the university does well, it will attract students from far and wide. That brings people to Joplin (e.g., students, teachers, professors). Especially with the new medical school addition, the university will need all the support it can get to remain competitive in the 21st century. It needs better marketing. It needs better equipment. It needs support from the Chamber of Commerce. It needs more interaction with the Joplin School System. It can become a great hub for both the arts and the sciences. Everyone should be proud of what Missouri Southern has become, and the city should become cognizant of its symbiotic relationship with the university.

In my job as a Global Master Trainer for LEGO Education, I have traveled all over and have visited numerous science museums, schools, education service centers, business facilities and more that have been created through the community coming together to make a unified location that can benefit more than children, more than business, more than civic functions.
What is that?
A place where students could come on field trips or personnel could do outreach to schools focusing on creativity and innovation.
A place where business members could come on retreats to help them focus on creativity and innovation and more.
A place where civic organizations could come to learn about creativity and innovation and how they can use it to propel their organizations.
I have worked with industry, educators, and children. There is so much potential – and it doesn’t have to be extremely expensive – especially with the technology of the day. I hope I have piqued your interest and you would like to talk.

I probably should have joined the Vision 20/22 group if I wanted any input, but I'm still working 40+ hours a week. Joplin's "brand" is mining. I'm glad to see that they are seeking historic designation for the original mine site, but where is ANY evidence of mining? The chat piles are disappearing rapidly. Maybe what's left of the Snowball area should be preserved. Where is anything to show about mining except a bunch of random, unlabeled stuff at Schifferdecker park? There is actually an accessible underground space just north of College Heights Christian Church that has been used most recently as a paintball place and junior league baseball practice. Put the mining stuff there and open it to visitors. Its big enough to drive right inside. Or open up the Crystal Cave. That would be a real jewel to put back into the tourist list of places to be. With modern pumps, it should be no problem to pump it down and create a fantastic destination.

A place where anyone can come to view and interact with Math and Science displays, activities, tutoring, and/or instruction. A fun place to LEARN other than a classroom setting.

When I tell people my plans, I often hear "Joplin has a museum???", even from people who have lived in Joplin for a majority of their lives. This needs to change. We need to become more aware of our history and culture, and do more to support the Joplin Museum Complex.
By the way, the murals around town are amazing. Keep that up!

Take an available downtown building, do some basic renovation, and create a discovery center that will draw kids all week (field trips) and on weekends. This center would draw people from a 75 mile radius of Joplin, spending money in our city. Corporate sponsors could support a specific area of the center. Picture the General Mills section where kids learn about healthy eating and pretend to shop and cook their own meals, the TAMKO area where kids learn about construction and build things with provided materials, or the Empire room where kids learn about electricity and do hands on experiments pertaining to power. You get the idea. Grants would be available and I'm sure the community would step up in support. Families are tired of driving to Springfield, NWA, etc.to provide fun, educational experiences for their kids. The Amazium is not a good picture of what I am talking about. Check out the centers in Springfield, MO or Bloomington, IL for a good example of what Joplin can do.

When improving sidewalks, perhaps add trees (similar to what was accomplished between 4th and Main and 7th and Main) in order to beautify the city of Joplin.

Develop neighborhood based identities (with signage) and assist the neighborhood with elements of knowing each other, helping each other, staying accountable to each other (including their own neighborhood council/steering committee). Bring to the neighborhood city services as requested, social service outreach, tool lending library, recreation, etc. Possibly use the neighborhood elementary school as the location for various events (most elementary schools are within walking distance and are a familiar building to the residents). Once the neighborhood council/steering committee is developed and trained in self-empowerment skills, sit back and watch how residents will accomplish great things!

I love the dog park area that is in the Parr Hill Park but I don't love having to drive across town to go to it. I think it would be amazing if we could add one into the Schifferdecker Park!

Joplin doesn't provide opportunities for healthy seniors unless they want to run a race or go elbow to elbow at the Y. A place for exercise (huge swingsets), and a place to dance would be nice. There isn't a single dance club in town. (Revive Hidden Acres!) A regular sing-along would be fun too; we Boomers are loaded with song lyrics! Making Joplin a more pleasant place for active adults would be neither expensive nor difficult. Someone needs to step up to the plate and lead the effort.
