On Wednesday May 6, 2020 at 3:22 AM, the Joplin Fire Department responded to a report of a residential structure fire at 1716 S. Empire. The first crew arrived on scene at 3:27 AM and found a single-story single family dwelling with heavy fire throughout the structure. Crews went defensive. Once the fire was brought under control, and deemed to be safe fire crews entered the structure and completed extinguishment. Crews then did an extensive overhaul to ensure the fire was out. The building sustained severe damage.
The Joplin Fire Department responded with 8 units and 20 personnel. The Fire Department was assisted by the Joplin Police Department, and METS Ambulance Service.
There was one minor injury to a civilian who sought medical treatment but did not require transport. There were no injuries to firefighting personnel.
The Joplin Fire Marshal was called in to investigate. He determined the fire to be accidental, caused by combustibles stored too close to a heating source.
