SUBJECT: Structure Fire at 912 W 21st

The Joplin Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 912 W 21st at 1034 hours this morning, 12 October, 2016. The first crew arrived at 1037 hours to find a single family dwelling with smoke and fire coming from the living room area. While making entry to extinguish the fire they found an occupant who was neither conscious nor breathing. They then removed 71-year-old Sandra Johnson, who had succumbed to her injuries. Fire crews were then able to quickly extinguish the fire and conduct a search with no additional occupants found. The fire was brought under control by 1050 hours and completely extinguished by 1115 hours. The residence sustained moderate heat and smoke damage.
There were no injuries to firefighting crews, who responded with 7 apparatus and 19 personnel. Joplin PD and METS also responded to the scene.
The fire was investigated by the Joplin Fire Marshal who determined the cause of fire to be misuse of smoking materials while wearing medical oxygen.
