Joplin Avenue to close January 30 for stormwater work
Starting Monday, January 30, Joplin Avenue will be closed from 5th Street to 6th Street for stormwater repairs. The closure is estimated to be in place for three weeks. Time of closure may vary depending on the weather.
“The box culvert in this particular block appears to be the original structure when the street was platted,” said Dan Johnson, civil engineer in the Public Works Department. “I’d venture to say that the first thing that drove over this street was horse-drawn.”
Johnson noted that this box culvert is the continuation of the same box work under Main Street, but that Main Street’s box had been replaced once before and was in much better condition. In 2003, the City recently added new box culverts to increase capacity for the Willow Branch Creek that flows under much of downtown area.
“The box culvert under Joplin Street is just a 50 foot stretch, but it actually crosses under the road, so it requires a full road closure, not just lanes,” said Johnson. A detour route will be available during this time. Drivers may want to utilize alternate routes during this period. All are encouraged to use caution while in the area.
The project is part of the Streetscape Phase V project. If you have any questions, please call the Engineering Department at 624-0820, ext. 584.
