The City of Joplin and other public health agencies are responding to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in many locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”).
As recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and MDHSS (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services), the following are simple steps to help control the spread of COVID-19:
- Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth to help protect yourself and others.
- Stay 6 feet apart from others who don’t live with you.
- Get a COVID-19 vaccine when it is available to you.
- Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.
- Get tested if you have been exposed to someone with a current COVID-19 infection or if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
- Stay home if you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms.
Notice Regarding Dashboard:
With the changes in COVID-19 testing methods from laboratory testing, which is reported, to now increasingly home testing, which is not reported, the COVID-19 dashboard method of surveillance and reporting has lost much of its original accuracy. This may lead viewers to draw inaccurate conclusions on the state of COVID-19 in the Joplin community.
The Joplin Health Department will no longer be providing tracking and data on our website after October 7th, 2022. Web inquiries on the Status of COVID-19 in the Joplin area should now be directed to the State of Missouri Department of Health state monitoring found here: https://health.mo.gov/living/healthcondiseases/communicable/novel-coronavirus/data/public-health/
