The City of Joplin and other public health agencies continue to respond to an outbreak of respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in many locations internationally, including in the United States. The virus has been named “SARS-CoV-2” and the disease it causes has been named “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19” or "COVID").
As recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and MDHSS (Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services), the following are simple steps to help control the spread of COVID-19:
- Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth to help protect yourself and others.
- Stay 6 feet apart from others who don’t live with you.
- Get a COVID-19 vaccine when it is available to you.
- Avoid crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren’t available.
- Get tested if you have been exposed to someone with a current COVID-19 infection or if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
- Stay home if you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms.

COVID-19 Vaccination Information

The vaccine is widely available from many healthcare partners in the area, including the Joplin Health Department. Vaccination clinics at the Joplin Health Department are offered to the public on a regular and ongoing basis. Call 417-623-6122, option 4 for Medical to speak to a nurse or make a vaccination appointment.
