Benefits Information

General Benefit Information

City of Joplin offers its regular employees an outstanding fringe benefit package - briefly summarized below.

INSURANCE BENEFITS

Medical Coverage The City is fully insured with Humana which offers Major Medical coverage. Coverage will be effective on the first day of the month following the start date of active full time employment, provided you complete and file with us the required enrollment forms no later than 31 days after the date you first become eligible.
Vision Coverage Humana also offers vision benefits. Plans that are easy to use and understand. From periodic eye exams to wholesale pricing of frames, avoiding high retail markups with discounts on Lasik and PRK procedures.
Dental Coverage The City is fully insured with Delta Dental. Coverage will be effective on the first day of the month following the start date of active full time employment, provided you complete and file with us the required enrollment forms no later than 31 days after the date you first become eligible.
Life Insurance

The City of Joplin provides life insurance for all full time regular employees.    

1.5 x annual salary = Life Insurance amount provided by the City of Joplin, the  minimum  is $25,000

$50,000 Additional Life is available, but is voluntary, based on your age for the premium

$25,000 Additional Life is available for spouse, but is voluntary, based upon age for the premium if employee selects $50,000.

$10,000 Additional Life is available for child(ren), but is voluntary, premium based upon amount coverage if employee selects $50,000.

Coverage begins on the first of the month following one complete month of City employment.  Individual premiums will be paid in full by the City of Joplin.

POST EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

Retirement Programs
(LAGERS)
Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement Systems (LAGERS).  Eligibility begins the first of the month following six (6) consecutive months of employment.  All employees of the City except Fire and Police Department employees who participate in the City of Joplin local Police and Fire Pension Plan shall participate in this system.  This program is funded fully by the City of Joplin.  If you have accrued at least five (5) years of accredited service, you are vested in the system and are entitled to a retirement benefit.  Currently we are on the LT(8) 65 program.
Retirement Program (Police & Fire Pension)

This plan is available to all sworn Police Officers and Firefighters of the Joplin Police and Fire Departments. Officers and Firefighters will be notified of all provisions of the Plan upon their employment with the City. Eligibility begins on the first day of employment. Participants are eligible for normal retirement after twenty-five (25) years of service without regard to age at fifty-five percent (55%) of their average pay. Early retirement is available at a reduced benefit from twenty (20) to twenty-four (24) years of service. Participants contribute ten percent (10%) of their annual salary to the Plan.

457 Deferred Compensation A supplemental retirement plan and tax shelter for public sector employees, this plan is administered by the ICMA-RC & Nationwide Retirement Solutions, both non-profit tax exempt service organizations specializing in retirement plans for local government employees.  Payroll deduction is provided for this program.

Vacation Leave - Annual leave may not be taken by new employees during the first six (6) months of their employment and shall be limited to one week during the remaining six (6) months of the year
(Police and General Employees)
Zero (0) to nine (9) years:
    Accrue 6.67 hours per month = 10 days per year
Maximum accrual of 160 hours = 20 days per year
More than nine (9) Years:
    Accrue 10 hours per month = 15 days per year
Maximum accrual of 240 hours = 30 days per year
More than fourteen (14) Years:
    Accrue 13.34 hours per month = 20 days per year
Maximum accrual of 240 hours = 30 days per year

(Fire Employees)
Zero (0) to nine (9) years:
    Accrue 10 hours per month = 5 (24hr) days per year
Maximum accrual of 240 hours
More than nine (9) Years:
    Accrue 14 hours per month = 7 (24hr) days per year
Maximum accrual of 336 hours
More than fourteen (14) Years:
    Accrue 18.67 hours per month = 9.34 (24hr) days per year
Maximum accrual of 336 hours
Sick Leave All regular full time employees shall accrue sick leave at the rate of eight (8) hours for each month of service or major fraction thereof.
