City to host neighborhood meeting to discuss potential work plan
June 9, 2010
City officials have invited residents and volunteers in a west central neighborhood of Joplin to a Neighborhood Meeting on Thursday, June 10. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Our Father’s House, 1101 S. Picher.
City staff will discuss the details of the Neighborhood Improvement Plan to address various issues and concerns of their residential area that were raised at the initial meeting in April. Citizens stated their concerns about lighting, traffic safety, loitering and other various issues during that meeting.
This is the second neighborhood to be addressed through the Neighborhood Improvement program, and includes the area between Murphy and Wall Avenues from Junge Boulevard to 10th Street. This area is just north of the first neighborhood district the City recently renovated in the initial Neighborhood Improvement Program.
“Through this program, residents can become involved in neighborhood redevelopment by working on their homes and yards with the various resources made available to them,” said Mark Rohr, City Manager. “In turn, the City will work on areas that have been identified for improvements, such as sidewalks, streetlight, police patrol to name a few. It is a partnership of City and community coming together to raise the level of pride in their neighborhood.”
Neighbors are encouraged to attend the meeting to hear more about the revitalization plan and the various programs offering aid to residents, as well as learn how to take a leadership role in working with City staff and volunteers.
The first neighborhood effort was located between Bird and Wall Avenues from Junge Boulevard to 15th Street. The 1500 blocks of Wall Avenue to Byers Avenue were also included. The City installed street lights, resurfaced roads and repaired sidewalks while residents cleaned up their yards and neighborhoods by making repairs, painting, completing yard work, and assisting others in the area who could not do these activities on their own.
Other neighborhoods will be identified in the near future for the NIP program, said Rohr. He advises residents interesting in revitalizing their neighborhoods to join together to improve their area to show a willingness and collaborative effort to move forward on improvements.
