City of Joplin to celebrate Local Government Week

City of Joplin to celebrate Local Government Week

April 28, 2010

The City of Joplin will recognize Local Government Week May 2 – 8, 2010. This statewide recognition was created by the Missouri Municipal League to raise awareness of and celebrate the important role city government plays in the lives of all Missourians. Governor Jay Nixon issued a proclamation declaring the first week in May as Local Government Week in Missouri.

To kick off the week, Joplin Mayor Mike Woolston will read a Proclamation recognizing Local Government Week at the Monday, May 3rd City Council meeting. Council meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month in the City Council chambers on the fifth floor of Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main. The public is encouraged to attend Council meetings to learn about government actions in their community. If unable to attend, citizens can watch a live broadcast of the meeting on Missouri Southern State University’s KGCS-TV. KGCS can be viewed on Digital channel 22 over-the-air; CableOne channel 7 or Mediacom channel 77.

On Saturday, May 8th, 67 employees of the City of Joplin will be honored at the City’s Annual Employee Banquet. These employees represent a total of 790 years of service, as all employees who are celebrating their work anniversary of five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, and thirty-five years of employment will be recognized. In addition, two employees, Larry Stewart and Linda Foulks are being honored for their 40 years of service for the City of Joplin. Stewart works in the Engineering division and Foulks is in the Finance department.

As a first for the state of Missouri, this week is designed to help citizens understand the work of local government in their daily lives. Citizens of Missouri rely on their local government to deliver essential community services. Municipalities are responsible for a great number of areas, including: planning and zoning of our community; bringing new businesses and creating new jobs through economic development; providing a variety of recreational activities, with green space, playgrounds, trails and entertainment options through our parks and recreation department; protecting our citizens with the service of our police officers and firefighters; providing critical information during hazardous weather and emergency/disaster situations; monitoring the general health and wellness of our community by means of the health department; maintaining hundreds of miles of roads for safe and smooth driving; keeping sewer lines and stormwater basins open so water can move efficiently; and general management of the City budget, along with many other services.
