Municipal Court offers citizens a Fresh Start

Municipal Court offers citizens a Fresh Start

April 10, 2008

Citizens who may have forgotten to pay a parking ticket or let a traffic ticket lapse without any action have an opportunity to make a “Fresh Start” on Saturday, April 19. Fresh Start is a program offered by the Joplin Municipal Court to allow citizens to take care of an outstanding warrant they may have. The program will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 501 West 4th Street. Citizens should park in the lot north of the facility and use the northeast door.

“The City understands that someone may have missed a court date or let a ticket lapse,” said Cindy Supiran, Court Administrator. “This program provides the opportunity for people to take care of their outstanding warrants with the City of Joplin. By taking part in this program, citizens can avoid the penalties that often accompany an outstanding warrant, including facing arrest, paying extra court fees, or paying extra money to a bondsman. This truly is a fresh start for them.”

The City chose to hold the event at First United Methodist Church to provide a safe, non-threatening environment for citizens to clear their warrants through an efficient court proceeding.

By participating in the program, the Court will waive the Missed Court Fee for the citizen. In addition to the Court Staff and Municipal Judge assisting people with their outstanding warrant and other necessary or recommended services, citizens may visit with social service agencies that can assist them in various ways. Information about community services will also be available, including GED Counseling, Family and Children’s Services, Crosslines Ministry, Watered Gardens Ministry, Ozark Center–Positive Returns, Salvation Army, Community Service Options, and Alternative Education Opportunities.

Persons wanting to learn if they have an outstanding warrant can call 417-623-3131, ext. 478 to inquire.
