How can I find out about tree removal services?: For information on the following services, call a Code Enforcement Officer at (417) 624-0820 ext. 525 & 526:
Permission to plant trees or shrubs in the street right-of-way (parking area), drainage ways or park areas;
Dead or hazardous tree removal in the street or park areas;
Permission to remove trees near public streets;
Dead or hazardous trees on private property (the city can enforce tree removal or pruning for unsafe conditions); Tree limbs encroaching on private property and not dangerous must be resolved between property owners.

1. How can I dispose of bulky trash items?: Joplin residents on the franchise trash program may set out approved bulky items with weekly trash pickup. Residents may also deliver bulky items to Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services) at 1715 E. Front Street, (Old Route 66) Galena, Kansas. Phone number 1-620-783-5841. Hours of operation are from Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.(closed for lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon) and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Contact Republic Services for a list of materials that will and will not be accepted.

3. How do I learn about the hazardous materials handling?: For information regarding the storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials, call the City’s Recycling Coordinator at (417) 624-0820 ext. 501 (see "Household Hazardous Waste") or the Joplin Fire Department at (417) 623-0403.

4. Are there regulations on what can be discharged in the sewer system?: City ordinances and state and federal laws prohibit the discharge of some materials into the sanitary sewer system. If your business has a sewage discharge that is composed of a higher concentration of pollutants than domestic or residential waste, call the Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 500 to receive information about permitting, pretreatment requirements and charges. Failure to do so may result in civil and criminal penalties.

5. Can I report property nuisances?: To report weed, trash, tall grass or other property nuisances, call the City of Joplin Code Enforcement Officer at (417) 624-0820 ext. 518.

6. How can I dispose of septic tank contents?: If you have septic or recreational vehicle holding tank waste to dispose of, call the Superintendent of Wastewater Plants at (417) 624-3615.

7. How do I report sewer back-up/stoppage?: If you notice a sewage backup or stoppage, call the City of Joplin Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 565. After hours, please call (417) 624-0820 ext. 420.

8. Where do I direct questions about my sewer and trash bill?: Questions regarding monthly sewer charges or rates can be answered by calling 624-0820 ext. 255.

9. Can I learn more about storm water sewers?: For information about having a storm water sewer installed in your neighborhood or to report a clogged storm water sewer, call the Engineering Division at (417) 624-0820 ext. 565.

10. Can I request street maintenance?: To request street grading, pothole repairs or other street and alley maintenance, call the Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 561.

11. Can I request a street sweeping?: For information about street sweeping or to request street sweeping, call the City of Joplin Public Works Department at (417) 624-0820 ext. 561.

12. What is the local procedure for trash collection?: Commercial and apartment complex trash is collected by private waste haulers. For a listing of local haulers call the Recycling Division at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501. Residential trash for every house, duplex, and approved apartment houses, is collected solely by Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services) through a franchise contract. For details, contact the Recycling Division at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501 or Republic Services (800) 431-1507.

13. Can I file a trash collection complaint?: If you have a complaint concerning your commercial trash collection service, please try to resolve it with the private waste hauler with whom you signed up for service. If your problem persists, call the Recycling Division at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501. If you have a complaint concerning your residential trash collection service, please try to resolve it with Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste Services), the city’s franchised residential trash contractor at (800) 431-1507. If your problem persists, call the Recycling Division at (417) 624-0820 Ext. 501.

15. Can I contact customer service about water and wastewater?: Water and wastewater customer service is handled by Missouri-American Water Company. For questions concerning your billing, contact their customer service number at (866)-430-0820.
