Dispatcher (Public Safety Communications Operator)
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, answers regular and emergency 911 phone calls and operates two-way radios to answer questions, dispatch appropriate law enforcement, fire, and/or emergency medical staff and to research and verify information requested by public safety staff.

TASKS:
Answers phone calls on regular phone lines to answer questions requiring general information about the Police and/or Fire Departments and the City of Joplin; answers emergency 911 phone calls, evaluating the call to determine response needed, dispatching appropriate law enforcement/fire/emergency assistance staff, and recording information required to document time and nature of the call and the time and nature of action taken. Operates teletype or FAX machine to send/request information needed by a variety of law enforcement agency/organization staff; operates two-way radios to provide information to requesting Fire Department staff or law enforcement officers and agencies and to inform officers and other staff of the nature and location of calls; operates computer terminal to enter/request law enforcement information and data; logs all calls to provide a record of daily activities.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of emergency dispatch policies and practices. Knowledge of NCIC computer operation/use policies, and procedures. Knowledge of the names and locations of streets in the City of Joplin. Knowledge of general Police and Fire Department operations. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with State, Federal, and local law enforcement officers, Fire Department and emergency response staff, and the public. Skill in communicating using standard telephone and two-way radio equipment. Skill in evaluating emergency calls and determining the response needed. Skill in remaining calm and calming others in emergency situations so that necessary information related to the emergency can be obtained and relayed. Skill in operating a variety of office equipment, including a FAX or teletype machine and computer terminal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires long periods of sitting; must be mobile to such a degree that allows efficient and effective job related movement such as moving around a work area or building to perform essential job functions; sighted and hearing to such a degree as not to compromise safety rules or the safety of self or others while working; low levels of twisting and bending may be required; must have degree of manual dexterity sufficient to operate common office equipment such as computers, typewriters, copiers, FAX machines, and telephones.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent. Must be certified to operate the Missouri Uniform License Examination System prior to obtaining permanent status.
SALARY: Hourly wage is $11.72, with excellent benefits
