April 16 Deadline to get debris to curbside is near
City officials remind citizens and volunteers that the deadline to get tornado-related debris to the curb for pickup is next Monday, April 16, in order to have it hauled away by the city contractor. Following this deadline, the city contractor will make a final sweep of the entire storm-damaged area to remove any remaining tornado-related debris. Root balls, tree stumps and other vegetation damaged by the tornado should also be moved to the curbside by this date.
As a reminder, only eligible debris is being hauled away from the curbs by the city contractor. Eligible debris is debris caused directly by the tornado. Items remaining from new construction or repair projects are not eligible for pickup at the curb. Additionally, general household items from the interior of the home that were not damaged during the tornado are also not eligible for removal at the curb. If any ineligible items are placed in a pile with eligible debris, the entire pile becomes ineligible and will not be picked up by the city contractor.
Following April 16, a final sweep to remove the debris at curbside will be done. It will be the responsibility of the homeowner to remove any remaining debris after this final sweep. Property owners have several options to properly dispose of debris after this deadline:
- Utilize the city-subsidized bulky items drop-off site at the Allied Waste Transfer Station located at 1715 East Front Street, Galena, KS at a reduced fee. Residents must provide a copy of a current Missouri-American water bill or a landlord dumpster rental bill, along with matching identification to qualify for the reduced fee. For questions about the Transfer Station please call 620-783-5841.
- Haul debris to a licensed landfill.
- Take recyclable items to the Recycling Center located at 1310 West “A” Street, Joplin. Operating hours starting in April are Tuesday and Thursday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Recycling Center is open to anyone and is free of charge for many items. Please call 417-624-0820 ext. 501 for questions about the Recycling Center.
If you have any questions about this process, the deadline, or if you want to report any remaining debris at the curbside that has not been picked up, please contact the City at 417-627-2900 during regular business hours.
