Ewert Pool Study

Ewert Pool Study Webpage Header

The City of Joplin has hired Waters Edge Aquatic Design to perform a study about the future possible uses of Ewert Pool. The City is interested in taking a creative and innovative approach to reviewing the needs of the community, the possible future options for Ewert Pool, while obtaining open-ended public input about the options.

It is the goal of the City to obtain public input, while utilizing industry knowledge, to provide information to assist the city in determining the best recommended use of Ewert Pool on behalf of the community well into the future.

Background

Ewert Aquatic Center is located at 615 S. Murphy Boulevard in Joplin. The City has two other city-operated pools: Schifferdecker Aquatic Center located at 4th & Schifferdecker and Cunningham Aquatic Center located at 25th & Maiden Lane.

According to The Joplin Globe archives, 1923 was the “greatest year in City’s history in development of parks”. Paul Ewert announced he would purchase a tract of land on East Seventh Street and give it to the City for a park. In July of 1925, Ewert Pool was opened inside Ewert Park. Joplin had five city pools during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Ewert Pool has offered swim lessons to adults and children, as well as swimming for the community for decades.

Ewert Pool was renovated into an aquatic facility under the first ¼-cent parks/stormwater sales tax approved in 2001. The Ewert Pool renovation was completed in 2003 at a cost of just over $1.1 million. A 140-foot slide was added, along with new attractions and features within the pool, larger deck space with shade areas, a family changing area and an expanded concession stand area. A zero-depth entry into the main pool was added, along with other various play features for families.

Usage of Ewert Pool has continued to decline in with the renovation of Schifferdecker and Cunningham pools.

Study Purpose

The City has asked Waters Edge Aquatic Design to evaluate and answer the following questions:

  • Does the City of Joplin need three pools?
  • What is the appropriate number of pools for a community of Joplin's size?
  • Provide a current structural analysis of Ewert Pool.
